MILAN CORTINA — The U.S. men’s ice hockey team secured the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics in spectacular fashion, but the most enduring memory from their victory didn't come from a game-winning goal. Instead, it was an emotional, post-game tribute to late hockey star Johnny Gaudreau that captured the hearts of fans worldwide.
Amidst the euphoria of capturing Olympic gold, the American players made sure to honor the memory of their beloved former teammate, affectionately known as "Johnny Hockey," who tragically passed away in 2024. As the team gathered on the ice to celebrate their monumental win at the Milan Cortina Games, they made sure Gaudreau was right there with them.
In a deeply moving gesture, the players held up Gaudreau’s iconic No. 13 jersey, displaying it proudly at the center of their championship photo.
The tribute extended beyond his jersey. In a beautiful moment that brought tears to the eyes of onlookers, the team brought Gaudreau’s two young children onto the ice to join in the festivities. Surrounded by their father's friends and teammates, the children were embraced as part of the Team USA family, sharing in the joy of the gold medal celebration.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will undoubtedly be remembered for the outstanding athletic achievements on the ice, but for the U.S. men's hockey team, the victory meant so much more. It was a fulfillment of a shared dream and a profound testament to the brotherhood of hockey—proving that while Johnny Gaudreau may be gone, his legacy and spirit continue to inspire the sport's greatest triumphs.
